The most effective way to get an overview of the vast landscape, of which Ayers Rock is the focal point, is by small plane. Flying at 4000 feet in a Cessna 172 we overflew Lake Amadeus, a huge salt lake located the southwest corner of Australia’s Northern Territory, about 50 km north of Ayers Rock.
Lake Amadeus is elongated in shape – about 180 km by 10km, and is the largest salt lake in the Northern Territory containing up to 600 million tonnes of salt, but no commercial harvesting is done it due to its remote location.
The lake remains dry and coated with a thick crust of brilliant white salt due to the arid nature of the region, however, dozens of small islands of red sand protrude centimeters above the surface of the lake.
