In stark contrast to the multicoloured  landscape of Iceland, many, if not most, of the beaches are covered in black lava. One of the most famous is the Djúpalónssandur beach in west Iceland. Smooth black pearls of lava cover the beach; however, a word of caution: the seas in this area can be treacherous with numerous reports of people being swept up by the huge waves.
